The Next Stage

We work with a lot of empty-nesters. Though, come to think of it,  I don’t mean only couples with kids grown up and gone. I include anyone later in their career who is starting to think about where and how they want to live post-career, or for their next career. I’m calling them Next Stagers. They might downsize to a condo in a walkable community. But fewer square feet and higher density isn’t for everyone. We have designed several major remodels that transformed the style and customized every space to fit how the client wants to live now. That often includes plenty of room for houseguests or kids to return to the nest with the right balance of space and privacy.

I love working with clients at this stage, because they are comfortable with the process and secure in their taste that has evolved over the years. It is fun to see them light up about having a home designed and crafted for them.

Here are some things to consider when you plan your next stage home:

Here are some things to consider when you plan your next stage home:

What do you enjoy at home?

— If you like to sit down with your coffee and read for a few minutes (or hours) every morning, or settle in a comfortable chair to listen to music, what would the perfect setting look like, including lighting, furniture and the view outdoors?
—Convert underused spaces to a place you will enjoy like a home gym, a sewing room, or a home office tailored perfectly to your workflow.

Everything needs its own place.

I used to think that organization systems were extras. But the right ones are essential. Having a place for all of your stuff is one of the best ways to bring order and calm into your household.
—Where will the pet supplies live?
—Plan storage for all of your gear—bikes, electronics, gardening tools, everything.

Master Baths:

—Plan for accessibility with curbless showers that ideally will allow wheelchair access. An accident or illness might limit mobility for a while and it will be so much easier to stay home and recover in comfort.

—Add a smart toilet. Our client traveled extensively in Japan and a smart toilet was a must-have for her new master bath. If the warm seat and gentle wash features don’t do much for you, consider the health benefits of never having to touch the toilet. The seat cover is self-opening and closing and, of course, they are smart enough to flush themselves.
—Remember the extras that you will enjoy every single day: Check out heated towel racks, add steam to your shower, put controllable lighting everywhere you need it, and heat your tile floors.

Kitchen:

No matter what stage we are at, we live in our kitchens and we need room for a couple of friends to hang out with us in there. On the other hand, consider shrinking the appliances, especially in a condo. In the kitchen above, our client opted for a 30” fridge with freezer below.

One final note on storage: Think through thoughtful solutions for everything you need and love. Then get rid of everything else! We are here to help.
